It is hard not to think that these spectacularly curious-looking curling shoots of the fiddlehead fern are not from an alien world. Best when prepared simply by sautéing or steaming the fresh shoots, they have a flavor that has been described as a sweet, nutty and grassy version of asparagus. 

Always cook wild fiddleheads before eating.
